On July 4—Independence Day in the US—they start a counterattack alongside the rest of humanity.

Emmerich had the idea for the movie when responding to a query regarding his acceptance of the possibility of extraterrestrial life during the promotion of Stargate in Europe. Devlin and Emmerich made a decision. to include a large-scale invasion after seeing that aliens often travel great distances in space before remaining undetected once they arrive on Earth.
