Will Smith, Bill Pullman, Jeff Goldblum, Mary McDonnell, Judd Hirsch, Margaret Colin, Randy Quaid, Robert Loggia, James Rebhorn, and Harvey Fierstein are among the film’s ensemble cast of actors. The movie centers on several groups of humans who get together in the Nevada desert after a strong alien species attacks the whole earth. On July 4—Independence Day in the US—they start a counterattack alongside the rest of humanity.

Emmerich had the idea for the movie when responding to a query regarding his acceptance of the possibility of extraterrestrial life during the promotion of Stargate in Europe. Devlin and Emmerich made a decision. to include a large-scale invasion after seeing that aliens often travel great distances in space before remaining undetected once they arrive on Earth. The movie was filmed in New York City starting on July 28, 1995, and it was finished on October 8, 1995.
